Fall Lawn Care Checklist: How Guelph Lawns Should Head Into Winter

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about great spring lawns: they’re made the previous fall. Cool-season grasses — which is everything growing in Guelph — do their serious root-building in September and October. Get fall right and spring takes care of itself.

1. Core aeration (early September)

Guelph’s clay-heavy soils compact hard over a season of mowing, kids and dogs. Core aeration pulls plugs out of the lawn so air, water and fertilizer actually reach the roots. Early fall is the ideal window — the lawn has weeks of prime growing weather to fill back in.

2. Overseed right behind the aerator

Seed dropped into fresh aeration holes gets perfect seed-to-soil contact. Early September seeding germinates fast in warm soil, then establishes through the cool, wet fall with almost no watering effort from you. This one-two combination is the highest-value treatment we offer.

3. Fall fertilizer — the most important feeding of the year

If you only fertilize once a year, make it early-to-mid fall. The lawn stores those nutrients in its roots and comes back thicker and greener at snowmelt. A late-October winterizer application doubles down on root reserves.

4. Stay on top of leaves

A thin scattering of leaves can be mulched into the lawn with a mower. A wet, matted layer left for weeks smothers turf and breeds snow mould. In leaf-heavy neighbourhoods like Exhibition Park or the older streets around downtown, that means cleanup every couple of weeks through October and November, not one marathon at the end.

5. The final cut goes shorter

Last cut of the year drops to about 2.5 inches so the grass doesn’t mat under snow. In Guelph that final cut usually lands somewhere between late October and mid-November — we watch the forecast, not the calendar.

From the crew: Fall cleanup spots are the first thing on our calendar to sell out every year. October books up by September.
